Sun, Jan 1. Goldsmith Woodlands, Andover. 12:15pm-2:15pm. Happy new year hike! Plan on walking/hiking somewhere between 3 & 5 miles at a moderate pace. Pack/wear: layers as it may be chilly and wet/muddy. Bring water, a snack, hiking poles & binoculars if you use them. The marshes adjacent to the pond are home to cattails, pitcher plants, sundew, snapping turtles and Great Blue Herons. The uplands provide habitat for resident deer, fisher, fox and wild turkey while owls patrol the margins. Park at 491 South Main Street, Andover. Wed, Jan 4. North Acton Conservation Land Mid-Week. Registration required. 9:00am. Ring in the New Year and join us as we explore three separate, but adjacent conservation lands in the town of Acton, MA. This will be a moderate-moderate/fast walk of 5-6 miles with minimal elevation gain (<500 ft). The terrain is mixed and typical of a walk through the woods: roots, rocks, and some soft forest floor. Plan to be out for 2.5-3 hours. Bring layers appropriate for the weather that morning and a bottle of water. You will need some combination of hiking boots, sneakers, snowshoes, and microspikes, depending on the snow and/or ice conditions! Both the meeting location and footwear/traction requirements will be emailed to registered participants 2-3 days prior to the walk. Sat, Jan 7. Haggetts Pond, Andover. 10:15am-12:15pm. Haggetts Pond is the local reservoir in Andover. Built on part of the former line of the historic Lowell and Lawrence Railroad, the trail offers a great, quiet place to go for a run or walk through the lovely wooded landscape. Sun, Jan 8. Let's Explore Callahan State Park in Winter. Registration required. 8:30am-11:00am. Join us as we explore Callahan State Park in Winter (Framingham/Marlborough). This will be a moderately graded 5 mile loop hike on woodland trails and open meadows. We expect to be hiking for 2 to 2.5 hours. Snowshoes and/or traction devices e.g. micro spikes may be required depending on the trail conditions. Heavy rain cancels. Sat, Jan 14. Morning Walk in Noanet Woods. Registration required. 10:00am-1:00pm. Join us as we explore one of the Trustees of the Reservations most popular properties in Dover, MA. This moderately paced, 5.5 mile loop hike will follow mostly flat trails, with some exposed roots and includes a short uphill section to take in the views from Noanet Peak (361ft). We expect to be hiking for about 2.5 to 3 hours. Heavy rain/snow cancels. Winter boots and traction (snowshoes or micro-spikes) my be required, depending on weather and trail conditions. Sat, Jan 14. Explore Boxford State Forest & Bald Hill Reservation. 10:15am-12:30pm. We will meet at 10:15am at the Crooked Pond Trailhead parking area and kiosk (Near 196 Middleton Rd, Boxford). Plan to hike between 3 & 5 miles along a section of the Bay Circuit Trail and others, sometimes hilly, woodland trails that meander through this extensive conservation area. We will enjoy great views of Crooked Pond along a re-routing of the Bay Circuit Trail over Eleanor Hill. Directions to Crooked Pond Trailhead/Middleton Road Boxford MA: From 95, take Exit 72 west on Endicott St. In 0.1 miles turn right onto Middleton Rd and 1.5 miles to the Crocked Pond Trailhead parking area and kiosk that will be on your left side (Near 196 Middleton Rd). Join us for our first Friday excursion of the Winter, exploring the Harbor Walk from Downtown Boston to Charlestown. This will be a 2-2.5 hour “out and back” walk on paved walkways, at a moderate pace. This trip can be joined using the MBTA Red Line “T” service. Heavy rain or snow cancels. Sat, Jan 21. Pawtuckaway State Park: North and South Mtns, Merrimack Valley, NH. Registration required. 8:45am. Join us on this loop hike over two mountains, along a pond, to a boulder field, and through the woods of Pawtuckaway State Park in Deerfield, NH. This will be a moderate to moderate/fast hike of 6-6.5 miles with an elevation gain of 1300 feet. Plan to be out for 3-3.5 hours. We’ll hope for snow for snowshoeing but no promises! Wear and bring layers appropriate for the weather that morning, water, and a light snack to eat along the way. You will need some combination of hiking boots, trail runners, snowshoes, and microspikes, depending on the snow and/or ice conditions. A parking fee of $5 per adult may be required. Sat, Jan 21. Let's Hike Wunnegen Conservation Area & Boxford State Forest. Registration required. 11:00am-2:45pm. The hike will begin at the Wunnegen Conservation Area at the Crooked Pond Trailhead located near 43 Crooked Pond Road (Boxford MA) at 11:00am. We'll hike about 6 to 7 miles along a section of the Bay Circuit Trail and other connecting trails that meander through this extensive conservation area, exploring its interesting ecology, wildlife and visit a past settlement, including, the graveyard of former inhabitants that lived here during the 1700s and 1800s. The family patriarch fought in the Revolutionary War. Our hike will take us through Wunnegen Conservation Area, Boxford State Forest and a portion of Bald Hill Conservation Area. L Richard Lombard
Sat, Jan 21. Northern Lynn Woods, Lynn. 9:30am-1:00pm. Challenging 6-mi. hike through rugged terrain with plenty of dramatic views, including Mt. Hermon, Mt. Spickett, Bow Ridge, Weetamoo Cliff, and ledges overlooking the “other” Walden Pond. Bring lunch, water, sturdy footwear, hiking poles, and traction devices if icy. (Note: If conditions warrant, we will change the hike route to an easier one but still with the scenic views.) From Rte. 95/128 in Lynnfield take new exit 63/old exit 44B (Rt. 1/129) to rotary, then Rte. 129 SE toward Lynn 2 mi., R onto Great Woods Rd. to end by playground/ballfield. Sun, Jan 22. Let's Explore 'The Quarries' in the Blue Hills. Registration required. 10:00am-2:00pm. Hike the Quincy Quarries... We will “Trail Trace” (hike every inch of every trail) in the quarries area. Some of these trails are a bit difficult to find... so if you are trying to Trail Trace the Blue Hills, here’s your opportunity to complete the quarries portion. Hike will probably run 3.5 to 4 hours (depending on group speed), and will be 5 miles with about 600' of elevation. Note that some of this is over granite blocks with ‘interesting’ footing, it will be slippery if wet. There is also one steep boulder climb that we will do. Ls Joanne Newton, Barbara Lightizer

All hikers should bring a backpack with sufficient water, lunch, extra layers and a personal first aid kit. Thunderstorms or extreme winds will delay, cancel, or shorten trips. Sun, Jan 29. Urban Hike - Walking City Trail, Section 4. Registration required. 10:00am-1:00pm. Esplanade Park at the Mass Ave bridge to the Bunker Hill Monument. “Connecting 14 Boston neighborhoods from the Neponset River to Bunker Hill, the 25-mile Walking City Trail is a hiking path through Boston's most immersive parks, urban wilds, community gardens, and greenways.” [www.bostontrails.org] Join us for Section 4 with special guest guide, Miles Howard, creator of the Walking City Trail! On Section 4, we will walk about 6.5 miles along the Charles River on the Esplanade then traversing downtown Boston’s best green spaces and across the city to a long, scenic stretch of the Harborwalk. We’ll walk labyrinthine streets of the North End, cross a set of locks on footbridges, and link up the with Freedom Trail for a climb to conclude the hike at the Bunker Hill Monument. Sun, Feb 5. Local Walks & Hikes Winter Workshop – Follow-Up Hike, Sudbury. Registration required. 9:30am-12:30pm. Due to mild temperatures and lack of snow, most of our local hikers have not been able to experience winter conditions and use their snow-shoes, micro-spikes etc. This moderately paced, 6 mile loop hike will follow forest trails and includes some steeper sections as we take in the views from Tipling Rock and Nobscot Hill, both around 600ft. More detailed information, including what traction to bring, will be provided once participants are confirmed on the hike. This hike is intended for those hikers that attended the Winter Workshop on Dec 3-4, 2022. Confirmation will be on a “first come-first served” basis. 11:45am-2:00pm. Join us as we loop around the woodlands and ponds at Phillips Academy. We’ll walk at a moderate pace up to 5 miles. If time permits, we may walk around the cemetery and the campus. Mon, Feb 6. Explore Boston's South Shore: Great Esker Park Hike. Registration required. 9:30am-12:30pm. This hike brings us to Great Esker Park in Weymouth, MA. This will be a slow-moderate paced hike among the rolling hillside trails and the coastal shores of Weymouth’s back river. There will be some climbs up steep, short hills, at a slow pace, to catch some scenic views. This area is an outdoor classroom and will thrill at any time of year but is particularly special in the quiet solitude of winter. Sat, Feb 11. Let's Hike The Joe English Reservation/Amherst, NH. Registration required. 11:00am-2:45pm. We will meet at 11:00am at the Peabody Mill Environmental Center (PMEC) parking area at 66 Brook Road in Amherst NH. PMEC is a 7½ acre parcel where the Environmental Center is located and site of the Peabody Mill that closed in 1920. The center is adjacent to the 600-acre Joe English Reservaton (JER). JER is also adjacent to the Betty Arnold Reservation, making for a large protected area that provides excellent hiking opportunities and an extensive trail system. Several brooks flow through this area, adding to its ecological diversity and wildlife variety. Expect to hike about 4 to 6-miles (depending on trial conditions), over hilly-forest terrain as we loop through this conservation area on several trails, which will lead us back to the parking area. Join us for a brisk moderate-moderate/fast walk as we wind our way through the back trails of Great Brook Farm State Park. We’ll cover 4-5 miles with minimal elevation gain (<500ft) as we walk around ponds, through pine tree forests, over and around rocky hills, and through fields. We’ll spend part of our time on single-track hiking trails with lots of roots and rocks and part of the time on wider forest trails with good footing. Plan to be out for 2-2.5 hours. Wear hiking boots, trail shoes, or sneakers with good treads. Bring layers appropriate for the weather that morning and water. Sun, Feb 19. Witch-Hazel Hike at the Arnold Arboretum. 1:00pm-3:00pm. Join an Arnold Arboretum docent for an up hill, off path walk seeing colorful flowers in mid-winter. We will meet at the Hunnewell Visitors Center, 125 Arborway, Jamaica Plain and first make several stops to see witch-hazels in full bloom. We will then hike up Bussey Hill and on to Peters Hill (the third highest inside Route #128) before returning to the Visitors Center. Wear boots for mud or snow. Heavy rain or snow cancels. Location & parking: within a few seconds after entering Stiles Pond Rd. from Main St. in Boxford, there is a large parking area on the left which can accommodate many cars. There will be some climbs up steep, short hills, at a slow pace, to catch some scenic views. This area is an outdoor classroom and will thrill at any time of year but is particularly special in the quiet solitude of winter. Join us for a mid-morning walk of an approximately 4.5 mile section of the Boston Harborwalk in Charlestown, MA. The route is planned as a one-way walk that uses a MBTA bus to link back to the starting location in the Charlestown Navy Yard. This is a pace-inclusive trip where folks are welcome to pause and enjoy the beauty of the harbor. Fri, Mar 10. Let's Hike Joe English Reservation/Amherst NH. Registration required. 10:30am-2:30pm. We will meet at 10:30am at the Peabody Mill Environmental Center (PMEC) parking area at 66 Brook Road in Amherst, NH. PMEC is a 7½ acre parcel where the Environmental Center is located, and the site of the Peabody Mill that closed in 1920. The center is adjacent to the 600-acre Joe English Reservation (JER). JER is also adjacent to the Betty Arnold Forest, making for a large protected area that provides excellent hiking opportunities with an extensive trail system. Several brooks flow through this area, adding to its ecological diversity and wildlife variety. Expect to hike about 6-miles over hilly-forest terrain as we loop through JER exploring some of the reservation’s perimeter trails, including Bobtail Loop, Plumber, and Bacon Loop Trails. You will be hiking over varied terrain with rocks, roots, and whalebacks/slabs with numerous ups and downs. We will be hiking out to beautiful Fernwood Lake, hike through Magnolia Swamp, experience a beautiful view of Gloucester Harbor and the Atlantic Ocean and hike past many glacial erratics. We will hike at an easy pace to end the hike around 2:00pm, depending on the pace of the group. The 2pm finish includes hiking the Boulder Trail, an option for those who wish to do it; otherwise the hike will end around 1:15pm for those not hiking the Boulder Trail. Join us as we explore a number of the less-traveled trails where we will discover some of the hidden gems from the Far East and Europe. Highlights will include two hilltop vistas, an amazing bonsai exhibit (with specimens dating back to the 1700's!) and the “Explorer’s Garden”. We will be doing a loop hike in the beautiful “Wilderness” property owned and protected by the Manchester-Essex Conservation Trust. We will begin our hike by passing through the beautiful wetlands of Cedar Swamp and Heron pond. As we continue our loop we will pass Baby Rock, Bishops Grave, Pulpit Rock and hike up beautiful Millstone Hill and conclude our loop by again crossing the boardwalk through Cedar Swamp and Heron Pond. It started with an original purchase of 250 acres, but now has grown to over 1000 acres. Our hike is mostly through wooded areas, with a couple fields thrown in. We will also come out the far side of Wheaton Farm and pass a large solar farm. Certain areas can be wet, so if it has rained a lot before our trip, wear waterproof boots if you have them. Fri, Apr 28. Let's Hike Bear Brook State Park, Candia, NH. Registration required. 10:00am-2:30pm. Bear Brook State Park is over 10,000 acres, which straddles across four towns, offers great opportunities for hiking. The park is also surrounded by other large swaths of protected land. We will meet at the Hall Mountain parking area at 10am (~ 150 Podunk Rd). Expect to hike about 6-7 miles over forest terrain. Our hike will begin on the Podunk Road Trail but we will soon turn off onto the Hall Mountain Trail, and eventually linking with Bear Hill Trail, which will take us around Bear Hill and its pile of boulders on its north side. We will have lunch/snakes on Bear Hill Pond, one of several beautiful ponds in this park. Following lunch, we continue our looped hike around Hall Mountain Marsh, and up to Podunk Ledges that will provide nice views to the northwest. From Interstate 93N take exit 9N onto Route 3N and follow for 1.6-miles. Turn right onto NH-27 E/Whitehall Rd and continue for 4.9-miles. Turn left onto Merrill Rd and follow for 1.1-miles where there will be a slight right onto North Rd. Fri, May 5. Walk the Emerald Necklace - Jamaica Pond & Olmstead Park. Registration required. 10:00am-1:00pm. Join us for a Spring walk along Boston’s iconic Emerald Necklace. We will meet at the Arnold Arboretum and then walk along the Arborway to Jamaica Pond and onto Olmstead Park. Sun, May 7. Let's Hike Beaver Brook Association Conservation Area, Hollis NH. Registration required. 10:00am-2:30pm. The Beaver Brook Association manages over 2200 acres of land protecting habitat for wildlife and providing an extensive trail system through beautiful forests and wetlands. Our hike will begin at the Wildlife Pond Trailhead (Rte. NH-130W/Hollis NH), and we will follow the Wildlife Pond Trail around Wildlife Pond, which will provide us many opportunities to observe a variety of water fowl, and mammals such as beaver, muskrat, and otter. The migration season is at its peak with many species of birds either passing through or settling in to nest. From the Wildlife Pond Trail, we will connect with the Hatfield and Hidden Ponds Trails, and then onto the Rocky Ridge Trail. The Jeff Smith Trail that follows along the scenic Rocky Pond Brook will bring us back to the parking area. The many picturesque brooks in this conservation area are flowing full, and the spring peppers are singing adding to the feel of Spring. Expect to hike about 6-miles over relatively level terrain, except for the Rocky Ridge Trail, which require scrambling over rocks and boulders with some elevation gain. L Richard Lombard

Sat, May 13. Let's Hike Cleveland Farm State Forest/Ipswich MA. Registration required. 10:30am-2:00pm. We will hike 4-5 miles along a section of the Bay Circuit Trail following trails that meander along eskers that are reminders of the last glacier that covered New England. Experience a relatively deep forest populated with oak, hickory, beech, hemlock and white pine. We will pass ponds created by the expanding beaver population. Occasionally, we may moderate our pace to enjoy the natural world of this splendid forest. Spring peepers should still be singing from nearby wetlands, and gray-tree frogs and American toads are beginning their breeding song. Many avian migrants are moving through the area, while some are settling in to nest. If that is not enough to pique your interest, how about the chance to stand in 3 towns simultaneously? Thurs, May 18. Nobscot Conservation Land and Tippling Rock (Evening Walk), Framingham and Sudbury. Registration required. 6:00pm-7:30pm. Join us for a brisk moderate to moderate/fast walk as we wind our way through several of the conservation areas in Framingham and Sudbury, including Nobscot Conservation Land and the Nobscot Scout Reservation. The trip includes a climb up to the rocky crown of Tippling Rock with an elevation of 538 feet, it is the highest point in the town of Sudbury with views of Boston, Mount Monadnock and Wachusett Mountain. We'll cover just over 3 miles. The terrain is a mixture of rocky and rooty trail and some narrower forest paths. Plan to be out for 1.5 hours. Wear hiking boots, trail shoes, or sneakers with good treads. Be prepared for a possibly muddy trail. Bring layers appropriate for the weather and water. We are going down to Codman farm, to visit lamas, goats and pigs. From there, we will head over to Walden Pond, for a sit-down break on a stone wall, along the shore. We will do a short stroll on a beautiful country road. We may see miniature horses, grazing in one of the fields. There is a Donelan’s Market next to the parking lot, where we meet. They have outdoor tables and chairs. After the walk, if you would like, please join us for a lunch from Donelan’s (deli counter, sandwiches, bakery rolls, fruit and vegetables). Meet 11:00am, at Lincoln Train Station commuter parking lot (drive to back of the lot, you will see us - parking is free on weekends). From Route 2, take Route 126 South for 2 miles. Join us mid-week for a brisk moderate/fast walk as we wind our way through several of the conservation areas in Lincoln and Concord, including Mt. Misery, Adams Woods, Wright Woods, and along the Sudbury River and Fairhaven Bay. We’ll cover just 6-7 miles with nearly 1000 feet elevation gain. The terrain is a mixture of rocky and rooty trail and wider forest paths. Plan to be out for 3.5-4.5 hours. Our hike will take us along a section of the Bay Circuit and other woodland trails that crisscross this wonderful forest. Expect to cover about 5-miles. Willowdale State Forest has more than 2400 acres with more than 40 miles of trails, and has several large marshy wetlands. It is now the peak of spring migration, and there will be many species of birds either passing through or claiming their breeding territories. Tues, May 30. Hike Beautiful Mt. Agamenticus By The Ocean, York, ME. Registration required. 10:00am-2:30pm. One can see it on a clear day from Halibut Point SP in Rockport and from its summit (692 ft) on a clear day one can see the Boston Skyline and beautiful Mt. Washington. Please join us for this beautiful 6-7 mile hike to the summit of Mt. Agamenticus, or Mt. A, as it is sometimes called. Mt A is a monadnock, an isolated hill of bedrock standing alone. We will be hiking at an easy pace to visit 2nd Hill and 1st Hill (the summit) to end our hike between 2:00pm and 2:30pm. Due to the construction of the new parking lot and rest rooms at the base of the mountain, parking is limited, as is the number of participants for this hike. Due to the limited parking, we will be meeting and car pooling up from the Park and Ride in Newburyport. Fri, June 2. Explore the Back Bay Fens. Registration required. 10:00am-12:00pm. Come join us for a walk around the historic Back Bay Fens in the Fenway. We plan to do a leisurely 2-mile loop around this unique area of Olmsted’s Emerald Necklace along the banks of the Muddy River between the Richardson Bridge on Boylston Street and Simmons University. We will visit the Rose Kelleher Garden and the Fenway Victory Gardens as the roses are beginning to flower and the growing season gets underway. We will talk a bit about the history surrounding the Victory Gardens which are the oldest continuously-operating victory gardens since WWII. The route is mostly paved or crushed stone and relatively flat; the row paths in the Victory Gardens are mostly wood chips, with paved or crushed stone on the wider perimeter roads. Would you like a challenging, fun, moderate/vigorous hike in the Blue Hills? We are going to explore Buck Hill and surrounding sections in the morning and go on to the North-South Skyline Loop after lunch. This hike will be 6 miles with 1600 feet of elevation gain and will have a moderate-fast pace (2+ miles/hour). Wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes because there are rocky, steep, and wobbly sections. The River Trail, a short and especially scenic family-friendly route, passes an old pasture along the marsh’s edge and then loops into an oak forest along the banks of the Little River. This hike brings us to Great Esker Park in Weymouth, MA. This will be a slow-moderate paced hike among the rolling hillside trails and the coastal shores of Weymouth’s Back River. There will be some climbs up steep, short hills, at a slow pace, to catch some scenic views. This area is an outdoor classroom and will thrill at any time of year but is particularly special in the spring. Plan to start at 9:30am and hike approximately 5 miles within 3 hours. The trip includes a climb up to the rocky crown of Tippling Rock with an elevation of 538 feet, it is the highest point in the town of Sudbury with views of Boston, Mount Monadnock and Wachusett Mountain. Sat, June 10. Explore Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, Concord. Registration required. Join us for a casual walk around Great Meadows Wildlife Refuge. Great Meadows has flat terrain with approx 2.1 miles of trails going around marshland and along the Sudbury River. This particular hike will also be appropriate for Beginners or those just starting to explore hiking. This will also be one of those hikes where we will stop at points along the trail and observe wildlife and take pictures or even do a little bird watching. Bring a camera or binoculars with you if you have them. During the summer months, the area is bustling with mallard ducks, Canadian geese, and red-winged blackbirds. We are going down to Codman farm, to visit llamas, goats and pigs. From there, we will head over to Walden Pond for a sit-down break on a stone wall, along the shore. We will do a short stroll on a beautiful country road; and stop at a secluded pond. We may see miniature horses, grazing in one of the fields. There is a Donelan’s Market next to the parking lot, where we meet. They have outdoor tables and chairs. After the walk, if you would like, please join us for a lunch from Donelan’s (deli counter, sandwiches, bakery rolls, fruit and vegetables). The total distance is approximately 5-miles as we circumnavigate Ponkapoag Pond. The scenic trek provides the opportunity to explore a part of the Blue Hills, and to be out in nature without having to be concerned about steep ascents and downhills. The trip is for seasoned hikers as well as those who aren’t comfortable with the more difficult terrains in the Blue Hills. Space is limited to 14 plus the leader. Sat, June 17. Spring Warner Trail Hike #3, Sharon to Foxboro State Forest. Registration required. 8:45am-5:00pm. The 3rd section of the Warner Trail is not to be missed. Join us on an approx. 13-mile, point-to-point moderate hike, with an optional 2-mile spur at the end of the hike. Hike is planned for a max of 7 hours but will very likely end sooner, depending on participant speed. This section is the highlight of the Warner Trail. Beginning in Sharon, we will hike through Mass Audubon’s Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary to gorgeous Bluff Head and the remnants of the old chimney at Allen’s Ledge. This hike will be about 5.5 miles and 600 ft of elevation gain. We will hike at a moderate pace on woodland trails but expect mostly trails that are rocky and hilly. Once under Rte. 3 bridge and through Neponset Circle, go over Neponset Bridge onto Quincy Shore Drive, then L on East Squantum Road 1.3 miles from Neponset Circle. Take E Squantum Road--which becomes Dorchester Street--for just over a mile to Shoreham Street on right. Park on Shoreham Street or nearby streets in spaces that allow parking. The property is the oldest property of the Massachusetts Audubon Society, established in 1916. It is adjacent to Moose Hill Farm, which is owned by the Trustees of Reservations. The sanctuary consists of habitats including forest, freshwater marsh, meadow, eskers and kettle holes. Over 160 species of birds have been observed on the property. We will return to Houghton’s Pond on the Green and Red Dot trails. This is a mostly wooded hike but with elevation gain. Group size is limited to 9 hikers plus the leader. Thurs, June 29. Blue Hills Hike (with some trailwork too). Registration required. The plan is to hike different sections of the Blue Hills, looking for areas that need brushing and small trees cut. “Most” weeks we will mostly be hiking, with occasional short stops to clip or saw a small tree. Some weeks we might find an overgrown area and hike less distance, while doing more trailwork. If we find LARGE trees, we will record them for future trailwork events, we won’t be bringing the larger 2 man saw on these trips! We will also be recording issues into the DCR database. Each week will be a different section, so trailhead locations will be sent to those registered. If folks are interested, these will continue ‘most’ Thursdays for a while. Fri, June 30. Let’s Explore 'The Quarries' in the Blue Hills. Registration required. 10:00am-2:00pm. Hike the Quincy Quarries... We will “Trail Trace” (hike every inch of every trail) in the quarries area. Some of these trails are a bit difficult to find... so if you are trying to Trail Trace the Blue Hills, here’s your opportunity to complete the quarries portion. Hike will probably run 3.5 to 4 hours (depending of course on group speed), and will be 5 miles with about 600' of elevation. Note that some of this is over granite blocks with ‘interesting’ footing, it will be slippery if wet. There is also one steep boulder climb that we will do. We plan a leisurely 6-mile loop starting at Charles Street, walking along the river in both Boston (the Esplanade) and Cambridge, incorporating the Longfellow, Harvard and BU Bridges, and talking about local history along the way. From Route 93, take exit 42/River Road west for 1 mile then take a right on Brundrett Avenue, then drive 1/3 mile to parking area at bend in the road where road becomes private. Sat, July 1. Hike The Boroughs Loop In Westborough & Southborough. Registration required. 10:00am-1:00pm. The Boroughs Loop Trail (BLT) connects the hiking trail networks of Marlborough, Northborough, Southborough and Westborough. The 33 mile loop opened in October 2019 and showcases the region’s natural beauty via wooded walking trails, bike paths, aqueduct trails, and sidewalks. Join us as we explore the southern section of the BLT between Westborough and Southborough. Much of our 5 mile “point to point” hike will be along the Sudbury Reservoir Trail and we will also visit Chestnut Hill farm, operated by the Trustees of the Reservation. Sun, July 2. Navigation 101 - Finding Your Way Around in the Woods, Borderland State Park. Registration required. Do you have trouble finding your way out of a phone booth? Wish you could go hiking by yourself, or with friends, but fear it would lead to your being on the news that evening? Or three days later when you are finally located? This hike is for you! The participants will take turns leading us. I’ll provide the maps, and everyone will get to help figure out how to get us to the next destination. But don’t be nervous, I’ve never led a hike where we didn’t get home... eventually. Seriously, if you don't feel confident hiking alone or with your friends/family because you can’t find your way around: COME ON THIS HIKE! No compasses, math, or knowledge of which side of the tree the moss grows on are required. I’ll explain how to use the map to find your way around. We’ll also learn what to do when it becomes obvious that the map does NOT match what you are seeing out there. (Don’t panic, at a local park/forest you are never that far from someplace that will make sense.) This hike will be at the Borderland State Park, and will run about 3+/- hours. Depending on how things play out we may cover up to 5-6 miles, and will include some small hills. Group size will be limited to 6 to allow everyone to be involved and learn. Sun, July 2. Hiking Beautiful Stonehouse Forest in Southern NH Seacoast Region. Registration required. 10:00am-3:00pm. Join us for a summer hike in beautiful Stonehouse Forest. If you have good stamina, this is a hike for you. We will be hiking approximately 8 miles. This is a loop hike over relatively easy terrain with wide and single track trails. The terrain is relatively flat with gentle ups and downs, with an assent to Ledges Loop Trail which overlooks beautiful Stonehouse Pond. After hiking Ledges Loop with its huge outcroppings , we will have lunch overlooking Stonehouse Pond. After lunch we will continue our loop descending Overlook and Locke Trails to Marison Trail, Bog Trail and finally South Trail to complete our loop. We will hike at an easy pace to end the hike at approx. 3:00pm depending on the pace of the group. You will be hiking over soft pine needles, leaves, rocks and roots. During this hike we will be hiking the Great Blue Hill section, including the Eliot Tower, Houghton Hill, and Hancock Hill. The hike will be 6-7 miles with some elevation gains, at a moderate pace, and will take about 4 hours. We will hike parts of the Skyline trail, so the trail will be rocky and steep in parts - sturdy shoes are required, and optionally hiking poles. Sat, July 8. Walpole Town Forest. Registration required. 10:00am-2:00pm. Walpole Town Forest was established in 1916 and was the first town forest in the state of Massachusetts. The hike will be 7 to 8 miles with about 300 feet of elevation gain through Walpole’s beautiful Town Forest with views of the Neponset River and remnants of the property’s once vibrant mill industry. The duration will be about 3.5 to 4 hours, depending on the speed of the group. We will be stepping over rocks and roots. Unusual 5- to 6-mile walk with great views along sandbar at low tide to a Boston Harbor island where we’ll walk along the beaches by the waterline, possibly seeing ospreys, herons, egrets, and more. From Boston, take Rte. 3 South to exit 12, Rte. 3A South. Once under Rte. 3 bridge and through Neponset Circle, go over Neponset Bridge onto Quincy Shore Drive, then L on East Squantum Road 1.3 miles from Neponset Circle. Take E Squantum Road--which becomes Dorchester Street--for just over a mile to Shoreham Street on right. Park on Shoreham Street or nearby streets in spaces that allow parking. Sun, July 16. Discover Nobscot Conservation Land & Tippling Rock, Framingham and Sudbury. Registration required. 1:00pm-4:00pm. Join us for a moderate-paced hike as we wind our way through several of the conservation areas in Framingham and Sudbury, including Nobscot Conservation Land and the Nobscot Scout Reservation. The trip includes a climb up to the rocky crown of Tippling Rock with an elevation of 538 feet. It is the highest point in the town of Sudbury with views of Boston, Mount Monadnock, and Wachusett Mountain. We will even hike on some of the Bay Circuit Trail (BCT). We’ll cover 3-4 miles. We will cook our own dinners, then retire into our sleeping bags and tents for the evening. Then, pack up Sunday morning and hike some more until we return to our cars. We are going down to Codman farm, to visit llamas, goats and pigs. From there, we will head over to Walden Pond, for a sit-down break on a stone wall, along the shore. We will do a short stroll on a beautiful country road. We may see miniature horses, grazing in one of the fields. There is a Donelan’s Market next to the parking lot, where we meet. They have outdoor tables and chairs. After the walk, if you would like, please join us for a lunch from Donelan’s (deli counter, sandwiches, bakery rolls, fruit and vegetables). As we hike around Haskell Pond, we will be hiking up and down varied terrain, not only strewn with the usual roots and rocks, but you will be hiking through and around Haskell Pond’s vast boulder field and outcroppings. After our loop we will hike onto Red Rock to ascend its summit with its view of the Atlantic Ocean. There is a scramble (using hand and foot holds) involved in our ascent to the summit. The hike is approximately 6 miles long. This is not a beginner hike. The hike is considered moderate, but with challenging sections. No dogs. Inclement weather and temps in the 90’s will cancel. Fri, Aug 11. Mount Pisgah Conservation Areas In Berlin And Northborough. Registration required. 10:00am-2:00pm. Join us for this moderately paced hike on Mount Pisgah. We will hike approximately 7.7 miles and get an elevation gain of approximately 900 feet. Mount Pisgah offers a moderately challenging terrain with hilly and rooty trails, small streams, a lake and a spectacular view to the Boston skyline. This will be a leisurely 6-mile loop starting at Charles Street, walking along the river in both Boston (the Esplanade) and Cambridge, incorporating the Longfellow, Harvard and BU Bridges. Sat, Aug 12. New Hiker Hike! (At The Blue Hills). Registration required. Come Hike! This hike is designed as an opportunity for those that are new to hiking, or just new to hiking with the AMC, to come on an easier hike and get to know us. This hike will be broken into two portions. The first will be an easier 3 mile, or so, walk on more gentle trails. After that portion of the hike, we will stop for a lunch break. During the lunch break, I’ll dump out my pack and show you what I carry when I go hiking, and explain why you should think about carrying these things too. Then, anyone who wants to leave can leave, and those that want to hike further... well we will go for another loop of 3-4 miles, that may include more ups and downs that the first loop. Sun, Aug 13. Relaxed Morning Waterfront Hike In Weymouth, Ma - Kids & Babies Welcome!. Registration required. 8:30am-11:30am. Join us for a 3 mile relaxed morning hike exploring glacial formations and tidal ponds on the shoreline of a cove in Weymouth. The trail has some rolling topography and terrain will include dirt, sand, rocks, and tree roots; shoes may get wet depending on tides and trail conditions. We will hike an out and back of about 1.6 mi and then a second out and back of about 1.4 mi. Participants can join just the first part or both parts. Hikers of all ages - including babies and toddlers in slings/backpacks/carriers - are welcome to join us. Participants who do not have children are also welcome and are encouraged to join this hike. The trail is not compatible with strollers. The leader’s energetic and friendly red setter puppy will be joining the hike and will be on and off-leash. This hike is the first in a series of 3 hikes in the beautiful Beverly Commons; one of the best kept secrets on the North Shore. Participants will be hiking at an easy pace, approx. 5+ miles, over varied terrain strewn with rocks, roots, scree, and slab, with a lot of ups and downs. This first hike will be approx. 3 hrs long, depending on the pace of the group. Each subsequent hike will add an hour and become more strenuous due to the terrain. Maudsley State Park features 19th century gardens and plantings, rolling meadows, towering pines, and one of the largest naturally-occurring stands of mountain laurel in Massachusetts. We’ll plan to walk/hike 4-6 miles at a moderate pace. The grounds & trails are beautiful and downtown Newburyport is nearby and is worth a trip if you can linger. We will hike at a moderate pace on rolling hills while covering the entire “Yellow Triangles” route (and a few short perimeter trails) for approximately 6 miles and 700 feet of elevation gain. Join us for a moderate paced hike as we wind our way around the entire perimeter of Ashland’s picturesque 157 acre reservoir and Warren Woods (the former farm and homestead of inventor and philanthropist Henry Warren, “The Father of Electric Time”). We’ll cover 6-7 miles. The trail is mostly level but uneven in places with exposed roots. Plan to be out for 3-4 hours. Depending on the pace of the group we should be finished between 1:30pm-2:00pm. Sun, Aug 20. Noanet Peak - Powissett Peak Day Hike. Registration required. Join us on a 5 mile hike through Noanet Woodlands, the Larabee Estate Conservation Area, and Hale Reservation in Dover, MA. Our route will take us over the prominent Noanet and Powissett Peaks, which offer outstanding views on a clear day, and past a 24 foot-high-dam and some lovely ponds. The terrain will be varied, with a mix of dirt, gravel, and slab, with some rocks, roots, and mud strewn in. It is New England, after all. The trails to the Noanet and Powissett summits will include short but noticeable climbs. We will plan on hitting the trail by 9:00am. At a moderate pace, we will likely finish by noon including brief stops for photos. etc, depending on group pace. Our meeting spot has a $6 parking fee per car unless you are a Trustees of Reservations member. Carpooling is highly encouraged. Wish you could go hiking by yourself, or with friends, but fear it would lead to your being on the news that evening? Or three days later when you are finally located? This hike is for you! The participants will take turns leading us. I’ll provide the maps, and phone with the Apps, and everyone will get to help figure out how to get us to the next destination. No compasses, math, or knowledge of which side of the tree the moss grows on are required. Preference given to those who completed Navigation 101 (Maps). This hike will be at the Borderland State Park, and will run about 3± hours (mid-morning to early afternoon). Depending on how things play out we may cover up to 5-6 miles, and will include some small hills. This will be a different route than the Navigation 101 hikes. Sun, Aug 20. Let's Hike Boxford State Forest and Bald Hill Conservation Area, North Andover. Registration required. 10:30am-3:00pm. We will meet at 10:30am at the Boxford State Forest parking area (1470 Forest St, North Andover, MA). This hike will take us along a section of the Bay Circuit Trail and other woodland trails exploring this wonderful conservation area that is about 2300 acres, and learn about the many conservation partners that helped to protect this large area. This loop hike will take us through the northwest section of this forest, and along the eastern shore of Towne Pond that provides habitat for wildlife including beavers, otters, muskrat and many water fowl. Trails vary from ‘dirt roads’ to narrow, winding, rocky trails… and we will try to stick to the quieter, narrower, less used ones when we can. Walk followed by dinner/social hour at Starboard Galley Restaurant, on the Newburyport boardwalk, at around 2:00pm. Meet 11:00am at Maudslay State Park parking lot. Sun, Sept 3. Nobscot Conservation Land & Tippling Rock (Beautiful Views of Sudbury Valley and Boston). Registration required. 10:00am-2:00pm. A moderate-paced hike through conservation areas in Framingham and Sudbury, including Nobscot Conservation Land and the Nobscot Scout Reservation to the top of Tippling Rock with a view of Sudbury Valley and Boston. We will hike 5-6 miles up some steep trails including a scramble up to the rocky crown of Tippling Rock with an elevation of 426 feet. Our descent will include moderate and steep slopes, rocks and roots with wide and narrower forest paths. The trip includes portions of the Bay Circuit Trail. Plan to be out for approximately 3 hours. Wed, Sept 6. Great Blue Section Hike with Observatory Tour. Registration required. 10:00am-2:00pm. During this hike we will climb to the Weather Observatory on top of Great Blue Hill, where our group will get a tour of the recently renovated facility. The guided tour typically lasts about 30 minutes (plus time spent in the exhibit hall), and includes the new exhibit hall, the history room and the 360° view from the tower roof. Note: There is a fee for the tour: $8, reduced to $6 for Seniors and members of the AMC, GBH, and Mass Audubon. After the tour, we will hike some of the trails in the Great Blue section. The hike will be approximately 5-6 miles with some elevation gains, at a moderate pace, and will take about 4 hours total. We will hike parts of the Skyline trail, so the trail will be rocky and steep in parts. We will cover 3-4 miles. The terrain is a mixture of rocks and roots with wide and narrower forest paths, fields, wildflowers, streams, and a few wooden footbridges. Plan to be out for 2-3 hours. The uplands provide habitat for resident deer, fisher, fox and wild turkey while owls patrol the margins. Small parking area next to a kiosk where we’ll meet & greet: 491 S. Main St., Andover. Join us for a scenic walk in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA on the last official day of summer. We are planning for a leisurely 3-mile loop in this historic space encompassing 175 acres, 5,000 trees, 4 ponds and numerous monuments and plants. We will explore The Sphinx, Washington Tower, Story Chapel and Bigelow Chapel and talk about local history along the way. Beautiful desert landscapes, include a pitch pine forest, with views of Essex Bay. Herring gulls soar overhead, while piping plovers scurry across the sand. Walk followed by dinner/social hour at Woodman’s Seafood Restaurant, in nearby Essex, at around 2:00pm. The Essex River salt marsh is behind Woodman’s. There are picnic tables. If the weather is nice, we will eat outside. Meet 11:00am at Crane Beach parking lot (Parking Fee). From Route 128, exit 14 in Gloucester, take Route 133 West for 5 miles. Sat, Sept 23. Fallfest - Blue Hills Skyline Hillside → Chickatawbut → Hillside. Registration required. 9:30am-2:00pm. Hike the Skyline trail from Hillside St (Houghton) to Chickatawbut Rd and return. This challenging route is approximately 7.5 miles and almost 2000' of elevation gain. Participants should be comfortable on rock surfaces and confident in their ability to complete the route in 4.5 hours, including a short lunch break. Sun, Sept 24. Mass Audubon Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary, Natick. 9:15am-11:30am. Join us on a 2-hour hike through the Mass Audubon Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary. Two years ago at this time, we spotted the most amazing mushrooms. We cannot promise that we will see them again, but we are hoping so. Trails are generally flat, with one gradual low hill trail, some rocks and tree roots. We will walk at a moderate pace, with some stops to appreciate the surroundings. Wed, Sept 27. Houghton's Pond Skyline Loop On Repeat. Registration required. 10:00am-2:00pm. A moderate paced 3-4 hour loop hike from Houghton’s Pond to the State Police barracks and back again. Yes – we will retrace our steps and return the way we came – to double the fun! This 6 mile hike includes many ups and down on steep rock. Please be comfortable ascending and descending uneven boulder-y rocks – we will be keeping a brisk but safe pace to maximize heart rate and calorie burn! Thurs, Sept 28. Ward Reservation, Andover. Registration required. 9:00am. Join us as we explore the trails of Ward Reservation in Andover, one of the Trustees of Reservations Properties. This will be a moderate/fast walk/hike of 4½-5½ miles as we climb all three hills within the reservation (just under 700 feet of elevation gain total), walk along marshes, and discover the solstice stones atop Holt Hill. Plan to be out for 2-2½ hours. There is a $5 per car fee for non-members of the Trustees of Reservations. We are going down to Codman farm, to visit llamas, goats and pigs. From there, we will head over to Walden Pond, for a sit-down break on the shore. We will do a short stroll on a beautiful country road. We may see farm horses, grazing in one of the fields. There is a Donelan’s Market next to the parking lot, where we meet. They have outdoor tables and chairs. After the walk, if you would like, please join us for a lunch from Donelan’s (deli counter, sandwiches, bakery rolls, fruit and vegetables). Sun, Oct 8. Let's Hike Bald Hill Conservation Area and Boxford State Forest/North Andover. Registration required. 10:30am-2:30pm. Our hike will take us along a section of the Bay Circuit Trail and other woodland trails exploring this wonderful conservation area, and learn about the many conservation partners that helped to protect this large area. This double-looped hike will take us through the northwest section of this almost 2300-acre conservation area. We will begin our hike with the Fuller Pond loop, and eventually to Pout Pond that has become accessible via a new trail that meanders through this wet area. Pout Pond offers some scenic views and a good lunch stop. Plan to hike about 6-miles, sometimes over hilly-forest terrain. L Richard Lombard

Fri, Oct 13. Explore Cambridge's New Neighborhood. Registration required. 12:45pm-2:15pm. Come and join us for a fascinating 2-3 mile walk in the North Point neighborhood in East Cambridge. The area was out of sight to most of us for decades because it was bounded by the Boston and Maine Railroad, MBTA Commuter Rail Line, the Charles River, Lechmere Viaduct, the former Lechmere Wetlands, and Interstate 93. This informative walk will introduce us to an area transformed from an abandoned rail yard area into a large development, containing commercial, retail, and residential development, along with the relocated Lechmere Green Line transit station. The landscape architecture is magnificent. Our tour will be led by Iram Farooq, City of Cambridge Assistant City Manager who received a Masters in Planning and Landscape Architecture from Harvard and undergraduate degree from the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi. She will discuss the history, planning objectives, present day accomplishments and future goals for this new neighborhood. After touring North Point, interested parties might wish to continue our stroll to the Paul Revere Park in Charlestown or simply board the Green Line train at Lechmere. We will hike through the southern portion of the state park in Framingham and travel through Welch Reservation, past Eagle Pond and Packard Pond and along babbling Baiting Brook. The trip includes hikes through the interior forest as well as alongside active agricultural land and portions of the BCT. We'll cover 5-6 miles. Plan to be out for 3-4 hours depending on the pace of the group. Wear hiking boots, trail shoes, or sneakers with good treads. No meditation experience is required, only a willingness to stay curious, attentive and open to being in a new way. This a loop hike is over easy terrain with wide and single track trails. The terrain is relatively flat with gentle ups and downs, with an assent to to Ledges Loop Trail which overlooks beautiful Stonehouse Pond. After hiking Ledges Loop with its beautiful outcroppings, we will have lunch over looking Stonehouse Pond. After lunch we will continue our hike descending Overlook and Locke Trails to South Trail to complete our loop. The sanctuary consists of habitats including forest, freshwater marsh, meadow, eskers and kettle holes. Over 160 species of birds have been observed on the property. Sun, Oct 29. Lincoln - Walden Pond - Fairhaven Loop [Train-Accessible]. Registration required. 9:15am-1:15pm. Join us for a moderate hike departing from Lincoln to explore the woods around Lincoln and Walden Pond. We will depart at 9:15am from the Lincoln MBTA parking lot (parking is free on weekends), and hike a section of the Bay Circuit Trail towards Walden Pond through Pine Hill (a bit steep but for a brief instant, it can be slippery in wet conditions). After a well-deserved break at Walden Pond (which will be shorter than Thoreau’s), we will join Wright Woods, then Seton Woods, before returning to Lincoln. This hike is considered moderate and not easy, as it is about 8.3 miles, and we will gain 540 ft of elevation. The hike will take us approximately 4 hours, depending on the group’s hiking speed. Come join us explore the trails of Crane Beach as we hike at a leisurely pace through 6 to 7 miles of the reservation on Castle Neck, Ipswich. Most of the route will traverse soft sand, exposed areas, and rolling terrain as the trails wind along and over a series of dunes. We will be stopping for lunch on trail so bring sufficient fluids, snacks, and lunch. The weather is getting colder so dress in appropriate fall clothing. Thurs, Nov 9. Fall Hike of Willowdale State Forest. 10:00am-2:00pm. This hike will take us along a section of the Bay Circuit Trail, through Ipswich and Topsfield. The trail will follow a 7+ mile loop made up of gravel cart roads and single track side trails. Sat, Nov 11. Fall Hike At Nobscot Conservation Land And Tippling Rock (Views Of Boston), Sudbury and Framingham. Registration required. 10:00am-2:00pm. A moderate paced hike through conservation areas in Framingham and Sudbury, including Nobscot Conservation Land and the Nobscot Scout Reservation to the top of Tippling Rock with a view of Sudbury Valley and Boston. We will hike 5-6 miles up some steep trails including a scramble up to the rocky crown of Tippling Rock with an elevation of 426 feet. Our downhill descent will include moderate and steep slopes, rocks and roots with wide and narrower forest paths. The trip includes portions of the Bay Circuit Trail. Sat, Nov 18. Crane Beach, Ipswich. 11:00am-2:00pm. Moderate pace 5 mile walk, across scenic sand dunes, and along the ocean beach. Beautiful desert landscapes, include a pitch pine forest, with views of Essex Bay. Herring gulls soar overhead, while piping plovers scurry across the sand. Walk followed by dinner/social hour at Woodman’s Seafood Restaurant, in nearby Essex, at around 2:00pm. The Essex River salt marsh is behind Woodman’s. There are picnic tables. If the weather is nice, we will eat outside. Meet 11:00am at Crane Beach parking lot (Parking Fee - parking pass may be purchased on the trustees.org website). From the Route 2/495 intersection, take Route 2 west for 0.5 miles to the Taylor Street exit (Exit 112), taking a left at the end of the ramp onto Taylor Street toward Littleton. Begin with pleasant stroll across the golf course, on a maple tree walkway. Enjoy sit-down break, on the dock at the AMC Ponkapoag Camp. Much of the walk is on dirt roads. Walk followed by dinner/social hour at nearby Irish restaurant “The Hillside Pub”, at around 2:00pm. Meet 11:00am at Ponkapoag Golf Course parking lot. Join us for a “wike” (hike/walk) around picturesque Kenoza Lake in Haverhill, MA. The trails are well maintained and good for all levels of walkers and hikers. We'll follow the shoreline loop, a 4.2 mile trek. We walk at a moderate pace. We’ll climb to the Castle too. Leashed dogs are welcome, and know that Winnekenni is a busy park and, there will be other dogs around. We will travel through a forest, fields and some wetlands of Weston’s Jericho Town Forest and Cherry Brook Conservation Land including a portion of the trail around the perimeter of College Pond. We will cover about 4 miles. The terrain is a mixture of rocks and roots with wide and narrower forest paths, fields, streams, and a few wooden footbridges.
