Sat, Jan 8. Hike at Goldsmith, Andover. 1:00pm-3:00pm. Old woods road meandering to Bessie's Point overlooking Fosters Pond. Some of the trees, rhododendrons and laurels growing along the roadway in Goldsmith Woodlands were planted by Bessie Goldsmith herself. Note the avenues of black pines, so dense that few plants can grow beneath them. Lady slippers abound here in late spring and other plants rarely seen are visited by Harvard University botanists. The marshes adjacent to the pond are home to cattails, pitcher plants, sundew, snapping turtles and Great Blue Herons. The uplands provide habitat for resident deer, fisher, fox and wild turkey while owls patrol the margins. Goldsmith is a beautiful spot for a hike in any season. Ring in the new year with fellow hikers. Plan to hike between 3 & 5 miles. Pack: warm clothing/wear layers, water, a snack, maybe hiking poles or spikes if there's ice or packed snow. Sat, Jan 22. Baker's Meadow and Indian Ridge, Andover. 11:00am-1:30pm. Indian Ridge and Baker's Meadow is a 2.1 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located in Andover that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. Plan on walking between 3 & 5 miles. Dress warmly, temps are forecasted to be in the 20s. Plan on micro spikes as the ground might be icy or ice-packed and slippery. Parking is at West Parish Church, 129 Reservation Road, Andover. Sat, Feb 5. Hike the Boroughs Loop in Westborough - Cedar Hill & Crane Swamp. [Revised] Registration required. 11:00am-1:30pm. The Boroughs Loop Trail (BLT) connects the hiking trail networks of Marlborough, Northborough, Southborough and Westborough. The 33 mile loop opened in October 2019 and showcases the region's natural beauty via wooded walking trails, bike paths and sidewalks. This 2.5 mile loop will take us over Cedar Hill with lovely views over Westborough and through the Crane Swamp wetlands. Snow shoes and/or micro spikes (or similar traction device) will be required depending on the impact of this week's warmer temperatures and rain on the 14 inches of snow that fell last Saturday! More detailed information will be provided once participants are confirmed on the hike. L Judith Watson

Sun, Feb 6. Warner Trail Loop, Wrentham State Forest. Registration required. 9:00am-12:00pm. Get outside for some outdoor quiet, calm, and peace! Approx. 5.5 mile moderate hike. This is a gorgeous loop hike in the Wrentham State Forest. Highlights include several ponds, Knuck-Up Hill (also known as Sweatt Hill, one of the old local ski hills (you can still see where the old rope tow was as well as the lodge fireplace!), lovely stone walls, and more. Bring water and a snack. Keep your eye on the weather as snowshoes or anti-slip devices (micro-spikes, Yaktrax, etc) may be necessary. Bad weather cancels; phone Laura if uncertain. No dogs. Then join us for a walk around Castle Island and along Carson Beach in South Boston. This will be a moderately paced, "out and back" walk of about 5 miles with great views of the Boston skyline. Sat, Feb 12. Nobscot Reservation & Tipling Rock, Sudbury, MA. Registration required. 9:00am-12:00pm. Join us as we explore the woodlands of the Nobscot Reservation, near Sudbury MA. This moderately paced, 6 mile loop hike will follow forest trails and includes some steeper sections as we take in the views from Tipling Rock and Nobscot Hill, both around 600ft. Micro spikes (or similar traction device) may be required depending on the impact of this week's rain and warmer temperatures on the snow pack. Sat, Mar 20. Boston Hill & Holt Hill, Ward Reservation, Andover. (rescheduled from 3/19) 10:00am-12:00pm. Join us to walk/hike Boston Hill and Holt Hill in Ward Reservation in Andover to enjoy the this beautiful reservation with views of Boston Skyline from the top of the Both Hills in a clear sky. We will start this 3 miles walk from the trailhead at 1275 Turnpike Street in North Andover, MA. Our pace of walk/hike will be from slow to moderate to take maximum of 3 hours. We start together as a group and stay together as a group to end the event. L Sam Aman

Sun, Mar 20. Morning Walk in Noanet Woods. Registration required. 9:00am-12:00pm. Join us as we explore one of the Trustees of the Reservations most popular properties in Dover, MA. This moderately paced, 5.5 mile loop hike will follow mostly flat trails, with a short uphill section to take in the views from Noanet Peak (361ft). We expect to be hiking for about 2.5 to 3 hours. Micro spikes (or similar traction device) may be required depending on the impact of this week's rain and warmer temperatures on the snow pack. We will hike in light rain or showers but will reschedule if the precipitation is heavier. More detailed information on the hike route and meeting location will be provided once participants are confirmed on the hike. L Judith Watson

Sun, Mar 20. Middlesex Canal Walk - Billerica to Chelmsford. 1:30pm. Billerica to Chelmsford walk along canal to Chelmsford plaque near 121 Riverneck Road. Sites visited on the tour will include the recently restored guard lock, the anchor stone for the floating towpath that bridged the Concord River, and many stretches of the watered canal. Meet at the Middlesex Canal Museum and Visitors’ Center 71 Faulkner Street, North Billerica, MA 01862. Note: There may be wet conditions along part of the route that may necessitate high boots or a shortened route. The walk will be led by Robert Winters with the assistance of others. [Unfortunately, this is not an AMC listing due to continuing problems with the Local Walks/Hikes Committee.]

Sat, Mar 26. Horse Hill Nature Preserve, Merrimac, NH. 10:30am-12:30pm. We will see a lot of Beaver's with a dam and beaver lodges. We will see the Lastowka Well, and Laskowska Pond has the beaver activity. If time allows, we may go to White Pine Swamp Trail and the White Pine Swamp. This will be a moderate hike and plenty of pictures to take. Please wear boots, and pack water and snacks or a sandwich/lunch. Most of all, enjoy the hike. Sat, Mar 26. Haggetts Pond, Andover. 11:00am-1:00pm. Haggetts Pond is the local reservoir. Built on part of the former line of the historic Lowell and Lawrence Railroad, the trail offers a great, quiet place to go for a run or walk through the lovely wooded landscape. We'll plan to walk between 3 & 5 miles at a moderate pace. Parking: There is a small lot is located right next to the southern trailhead off of Haggetts Pond Rd. To reach the southern trailhead from the direction of Boston, take I-93 north towards Andover, and take exit 43. Turn left onto State Route 133 (Lowell Street) and continue for about a mile. Turn right onto Haggetts Pond Road - the trailhead will be on the right. L Robin Doyle

Tues, Mar 29. Let's Explore - Walpole Town Forest. Registration required. 10:00am-2:00pm. Group Size limited to 10. This will be an approximately 7 mile gentle hike through Walpole's beautiful Town Forest with views of the Neponset River and remnants of the property's once vibrant mill industry. Wed, Mar 30. Let's Explore - Noanet Woodlands and more. Registration required. Noanet Woodlands, Caryl Park, and maybe a bit of Hale Reservation. Group limited to 10. Approximately 7-8 miles, 10am to about 2pm. Noanet Woodlands is Trustees of Reservations property. This 600 acre property abuts Caryl Park and Hale Reservation, as well as conservation land, so we will have plenty of trails to choose from. Noanet contains the remains of an old dam and wheel pit which are very interesting. We will share some of the history of this area as we hike along. L Joanne Newton, CL John Schepis

Sat, Apr 2. Let's Explore - Moose Hill, Sharon. Registration required. 10:00am-2:00pm. 7-8 miles, about 3.5 to 4 hours (depending, of course, on everyone's pace.) limited to 10. Moose Hill was established in 1916, and is the oldest Mass Audubon wildlife sanctuary. It features a red maple swamp boardwalk, as well as, no surprise here, Moose Hill. There are about 2000 acres, and 20 miles of trails, so we will explore. There is a nice view from a point on Moose Hill, we will plan to get there. So some elevation gain, although not many steep hills. This facility abuts Moose Hill Farm, a property of The Trustees of Reservations, and we might find ourselves wandering there as well. Moose Hill is 534' high, so some elevation if we climb to the summit. While we might see deer, seeing a moose is unlikely. Thunderstorms or extreme winds will delay, cancel, or shorten trips. We won't cancel because of rain. So, if this sounds good, register quickly, as space is limited. Ls Bob Vogel, Joanne Newton; CL Katie Lorson

Sun, Apr 3. Let's Explore - Callahan State Park. Registration required. 9:00am-12:00pm. Join us for a small group hike around Callahan State Park, just north of Framingham. This will be a moderately graded 6 mile loop hike on woodland trails and open meadows. We expect to be hiking for 2.5 to 3 hours. Its April so be prepared to hike in light rain/showers - we will reschedule if the precipitation is heavier. Tues, Apr 5. Let's Explore - Rocky Woods, Medfield. Registration required. 10:00am-2:00pm. Group size limited to 10. This will be an approx 7 mile hike on trails that are at times rocky and and somewhat hilly. There may be areas that are a bit wet or muddy. We will also see lovely ponds, remnants of a historic pitchfork factory, heron nests (not sure if too early for actual heron in the nests). There is a $6.00 parking fee (unless member of Trustees of Reservation) You must bring a mask. The duration will be about 4 hours, depending on the speed of our group. There are 2 parking lots and the headquarters has restrooms. Sat, Apr 9. Hike the Burroughs Loop - Westborough to Northborough. Registration required. 9:00am-12:30pm. The Boroughs Loop Trail (BLT) connects the hiking trail networks of Marlborough, Northborough, Southborough and Westborough. The 33 mile loop opened in October 2019 and showcases the region's natural beauty via wooded walking trails, bike paths and sidewalks. Join us as we explore one of the more remote sections of the BLT between Westborough and Northborough. Our 6 mile hike will take us through woodlands, wetlands/swamp (Crane Swamp) and a section of the MWRA Aqueduct Trail. This is a point to point hike and participants must be prepared to help with "spotting cars", wearing masks. It's April so be prepared to hike in light rain or showers but we will reschedule if the precipitation is heavier. The properties offer over 10 miles of woodland trails, centered on 370-foot Noon Hill, a prominent summit and scenic vista. Noon Hill and Shattuck are links in the 200 mile Bay Circuit Trail. Holt Pond, a constructed mill pond, is located on the property. Our hike will take us on a 7 mile trip with combined elevation of approximately 400 ft., that includes Noon Hill, Holt Pond and the Stop River. It started with an original purchase of 250 acres, but now has grown to over 1000 acres. Our hike is mostly through wooded areas, with a couple fields thrown in. We will also come out the far side of Wheaton Farm and pass a large solar farm. Certain areas can be wet, so if it has rained a lot before our trip, wear waterproof boots if you have them. Sat, Apr 16. Let's Explore - Hale Reservation and Noanet Woodlands. Registration required. 10:00am-2:00pm. Our hike will be roughly 7-8 miles and will take about 4 hours, depending on our hiking speed. Located 25 miles southwest of Boston, Hale Reservation offers hikers smooth trails, waterside views, and a rich history. The main entrance to the reservation was known on early maps as Old Indian Path, while the name Powissett – as in the nearby Powissett Brook and Powissett Pond – harkens the Powissett Indians, members of whom show record of living in Dover as recently as 1763. Noanet Woodlands offers hikers an array of trails as well. We will hike up Noanet Peak for a satisfying climb and a distant view of Boston. We will limit our group size to 10. Thunderstorms, severe weather and wind may delay, shorten or cancel our hike, but we won't cancel for rain. Please bring a raincoat and hiking boots if we have had much rain before the hike. Plan on about 4 hours depending on the hiking speed of our group. Myles Standish State Forest is over 12,400 acres and is one of our state's largest and most important protected areas. We will have much to explore along our hike: the globally rare Pine Barrens ecosystem, several coastal plain kettle ponds, and 42 rare and endangered plants and animals. While we may not see many of these, especially the endangered species, we can learn more about them as we hike along. Tues, Apr 26. Let's Explore - Wompatuck State Park, Hingham. Registration required. 10:00am-2:00pm. Join us as we explore the trails in Wompatuck State Park, a state-owned, public recreation area of about 3,500 acres, located primarily in the town of Hingham with portions in the neighboring towns of Cohasset, Norwell, Scituate and Norwell. The park has more than 70 miles of roads, multi-use trails and bike paths, offering hiking, road/mountain biking, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, camping, and skiing. The park is also home to Mt. Blue Spring, as popular source of water. Our hike will take us on moderately graded, woodland trails for about 7 miles with an elevation gain of roughly 130 ft. Duration of the hike is expected between 3.5 and 4 hours, including break/lunch at a scenic location overlooking Aaron River Reservoir. Sat, Apr 30. Let's Explore - Wilson Mtn, Whitcomb Woods, Dedham. Registration required. Come join our Spring Hike to the Mount Wilson Reservation in Dedham, MA. We will be hiking approximately 7 miles on mostly flat land. We will be hiking Wilson Mountain, which “summits” at 295 feet and hike into Whitcomb woods. Both Wilson Mountain and Whitcomb Woods are part of the Dedham Trail System and the Wilson Mountain Reservation. Wilson Mountain Reservation contains 207 acres of wild and varied land. It also offers the highest terrain in Town with panoramic views of Boston, the Blue Hills and surrounding communities. It is characterized by uneven rocky topography that ranges from low swamps to high rock outcroppings. 91% of Wilson Mountain is forested. Sun, May 8. Warner Train Spring Series, Hike 3 of 3, Sharon to Foxboro State Forest. Registration required. 9:00am-5:00pm. The 3rd section of the Warner Trail is not to be missed. Join us on an approx. 13-mile, point-to-point moderate hike, with an optional 2-mile spur at the end of the hike. Hike is planned for a max of 7 hours but will very likely end sooner, depending on participant speed. This section is the highlight of the Warner Trail. Beginning in Sharon, we will hike through Mass Audubon's Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary, to gorgeous Bluff Head and the remnants of the old chimney at Allen's Ledge. We'll wander along beautiful wooded lanes and past old cellar holes from times gone by. A certain hiker has been known to take a dip in the Neponset Reservoir on a hot day. Before we finish at the Foxboro State Forest, hikers in the past have stopped for coffee or ice cream along the way. Sat, May 14. Let's Explore - Skyline End to End. Registration required. We will hike the entire Blue Hills Skyline from End to End. This route is approximately 8.5 miles with over 2,000' of elevation gain. This will be a strenuous hike so all participants must be able to manage steep inclines, scramble over rock ledges, and be prepared to keep up a good pace. This hike usually takes about 6 hours so we will determine the exact start time as we get closer to this date. I will send out an Information Sheet with the details several days before the hike. We will need to spot cars at each end of the hike and carpool at the beginning and end to get everyone back to their cars. Extra time will be needed to allow for this. The marshes adjacent to the pond are home to cattails, pitcher plants, sundew, snapping turtles and Great Blue Herons. Sat, May 28. Let's Explore - Wompatuck State Park, Hingham. Registration required. 10:00am-2:00pm. 7-8 miles, about 3.5 to 4 hours (depending, of course, on everyone's pace). Limited to 10. This 3,500-acre Massachusetts state park stretches into four towns - Hingham, Cohasset, Scituate and Norwell. There are numerous trails to choose from and many have rocky outcroppings and glacial erratic boulders. Much of the park is undeveloped and is heavily wooded. Trees include Atlantic white cedar, American holly, chestnut oak, shagbark hickory, mountain laurel, pink dogwood, white pine, American beech, and hemlock - some estimated to be 175 years old. Wildflowers and flowering shrubs also grow in abundance. Among the most common are swamp azalea, solomon's seal, white geranium, ladies slipper, and sheep laurel. Unusual 6-mile walk across part of Boston Harbor via a low-tide sandbar to southern edge of Thompson Island followed by a coastal walk to a little-known public beach in Quincy. Proper footwear required (hiking boots, sneakers, or water-resistant shoes); bring lunch & water. From Boston, take Rte. 3 South to exit 12, Rte. 3A South. Once under Rte. 3 bridge and through Neponset Circle, go over Neponset Bridge onto Quincy Shore Drive, then L on East Squantum Road 1.3 miles from Neponset Circle. Take E Squantum Road – which becomes Dorchester Street – for just over a mile to Shoreham Street on right. Park on Shoreham Street or nearby streets in spaces that allow parking. Late morning to mid-afternoon. Moose Hill was established in 1916, and is the oldest Mass Audubon wildlife sanctuary. It features a red maple swamp boardwalk, as well as, no surprise here, Moose Hill. There are about 2000 acres, and 20 miles of trails, so we will explore. There is a nice view from a point on Moose Hill, we will plan to get there. This facility abuts Moose Hill Farm, a property of The Trustees of Reservations, and we might find ourselves wandering there as well. Monadnock, and the Boston skyline, can be found on a clear day, along the trails, including from Tipling Rock, which is a prominent hilltop that stands at 410 feet in elevation. Wed, June 29. Let's Explore The Great River Preserve Evening Walk, Bridgewater. Registration required. 6:00pm-8:30pm. Approximately 4 miles in with little elevation gain. This Wildlands Trust property encompasses 230 acres of open field and woods running along the Taunton River. It includes over a mile of pristine river frontage along one of the most scenic and undisturbed stretches of the entire Taunton River, expansive open fields, mixed pine/oak woodlands, vernal pools, and habitat for several rare species, including eastern box turtle. Join us for a hike in Noanet Woodlands, a Trustees of the Reservation property that features scenic woodlands, ponds and a former mill site. Noanet is named after a chief of the Natick Indians, who camped, fished, and hunted along Noanet Brook. It was later cleared for timber, firewood, and a few small homesteads, before being used as a sawmill and a large rolling and slitting mill for the Dover Union Iron Company. Our roughly 6-mile hike will start at Caryl Park in Dover, will include passing remnants of the mill’s 24-foot-high dam and 20-foot-deep wheel pit. We will hike at a moderate pace. Fri, Aug 19. Hiking the Beverly Commons. Registration required. 10:00am-12:30pm. This will be the first in a series of 3 hikes. The 1st 2+hrs, the 2nd 3+hrs, the 3rd 4+hrs., depending on the pace of the group. We will be hiking over varied terrain with rocks, roots, scree, and whalebacks at an easy pace. A lot of ups and downs, a real workout in a beautiful location. As always wear appropriate hiking footwear (no sneakers), bring 2 liters of water, snacks, bug spray/net, sunscreen as needed, and hiking poles if you use them (highly recommended). No dogs. We will hike around in the afternoon, then ‘set up camp’, “bear bag” our food. We will prepare our suppers, then retire in our sleeping bags and tents for the night. We will hike approximately 6 -7 miles and should get about 500' of elevation gain. I will send out the Information Sheet with the meet up location and route several days before the hike. The 2nd 3+hrs, and the 3rd 4+hrs,. depending on the pace of the group. We will be hiking varied terrain with rocks, roots, scree, whale backs at an easy pace. A lot of ups and downs, best described as a real workout in a beautiful forest. As always wear appropriate hiking footwear (no sneakers or sandals), bring 2 liters of water, snacks, bug spray/net, sunscreen as needed, and hiking poles if you use them (highly recommended). Sat, Aug 27. Hike the Blue Hills. Registration required. Hike the Quincy Quarries... We will “Trail Trace” (hike every inch of every trail) in the quarries area. (From 4223 north past 4229) Some of these trails are a bit difficult to find... so if you are trying to Trail Trace (or the Friends of the Blue Hills equivalent - 125 Mile Club) the Blue Hills here’s your opportunity to complete the quarries portion. Hike will probably run 3.5 to 4 hours (depending of course on group speed), and will be 5 miles with about 600' of elevation. Moderate paced 2½-3½ hour 5 mile hike from Houghton’s Pond to Buck Hill ascending Buck twice. The second ascent we will stop to enjoy the view. We will return to Houghton’s Pond on the Green and Red Dot trails. This is a mostly wooded hike but with elevation gain. Wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes. Bring insect repellent, sunscreen, water, snacks and rain jacket (just in case). Heavy rains/thunderstorms will cancel. Group size is limited to 9 hikers plus the leader. Join us for a beautiful hike on the BCT from Harold Parker, thru Skug Reservation and finishing at Mary French Reservation. We will be spotting cars at Skug and Harold Parker and will begin the hike promptly at 9:30am. There is a $5 parking fee at HP if you do not have a DCR parking pass, $20 if out of state. We will start on the Bay Circuit Trail and then get on the Blue Trail to do a loop, then get back on BCT to finish at Mary French. Wed, Sept 14. Wednesday Evening Hike to Wildcat Hill in Ashland. Registration required. 4:45pm-7:00pm. This hike is designed to help people who WFH (work from home), and others looking for a hilly and scenic hike, get out into the woods for a mid-week break. Join us for a 4.5 mile moderately paced hike up Wildcat Hill and to a nearby water tower along part of the Bay Circuit Trail in Ashland. The trailhead is a short 10-minute drive south from I-90, and easily accessed from Rte 9 and Rte 30 in Metro-West Boston. There are a good amount of ups and downs and many scenic ledges looking towards Boston and Malden. You will be hiking through the beautiful Magnolia Swamp, experience a beautiful view of Gloucester Harbor, plus many glacial erratics. We will hike at an easy pace to end the hike between 1:30 and 2:00pm, depending on the pace of the group. This will be an easy to moderately paced 2 hr walk with many water views of Concord River, ponds, marshes and remains of Brewster’s stone boathouse and summer refuge. There are several short hills but no rocks or roots. Take Monument Road, Concord north about 1 mile north of Hutchin’s Farm and turn Right on Ball’s Hill Road (shortly after Buttrick’s Hill Road). Sat, Sept 24. Let’s Explore - Whitney & Thayer Woods. Registration required. Whitney & Thayer Woods, plus Weir River Farm and Turkey Hill, Cohasset. 7+ miles, mostly woods with one ascent of Turkey Hill. About 450' elevation gain. 10:00 - about 2:00 with a lunch break. Trails vary from ‘dirt roads’ to narrow, winding, rocky trails... and we will try to stick to the quieter, narrower, less used ones when we can. We will hike through Whitney and Thayer Woods, a property that is a “The Trustees of Reservations” property in Hingham & Cohasset. This 824-acre property includes: Glacial erratics, including a grouping called Ode’s Den, named after Theodore “Ode” Pritchard, a hermit who lived under one of the boulders after losing his home in 1830. We will then pass into Turkey Hill, a 62-acre property co-managed by The Trustees of Reservations with the Towns of Cohasset and Hingham. This property has a 187-foot summit with a spectacular view. Finally, we will hike around Weir River Farm, another property of The Trustees of Reservations. This is a 75-acre working farm comprising fields and pastures. Group limited to 10. Following the Ellis Land, Tower and Bay Circuit Trails we will hike approximately 7 miles and get an elevation gain of about 1000 feet. This is a mostly wooded hike with some ups and downs but there will also be opportunity for scenic views looking towards Boston, Blue Hills and Mount Wachusett. We will also explore Ford’s Folly - the remains of Henry Ford’s abandoned plan to build a colonial village in Sudbury - and visit Henry’s Hill - a popular place for bird watchers. Sat, Oct 1. Let’s Explore - Wachusett Mountain Reservation. Registration required. 9:45am-2:00pm. Let's explore the Wachusett Mountain Reservation in Boylston, MA! Rising above the surrounding forest to a height of 2006 feet, Mount Wachusett stands as a unique landmark within the central New England landscape. From the summit, a clear day reveals views of Mt. Monadnock in New Hampshire, the Berkshires to the west, and the Boston skyline to the east. The 3,000-acre Wachusett Mountain State Reservation surrounds the summit and offers a wealth of natural and recreational resources. The route is approximately 6.5 miles at moderate pace (2 miles per hour) with about 1500 feet of elevation gain. This is not a beginner hike but a moderate one. Participants must be in good physical form with current hiking experience and should be comfortable with elevation gain. The last section of the trail has steep inclines with rocky ledges and can be difficult. Be prepared to keep at a moderate pace for most of the hike and extra time will be added for the last part of the hike depending on the group pace. Thunderstorms or heavy rain will result in cancellation of the hike. NOTE: Good hiking shoes, well broken into and hiking poles, appropriate hiking clothing (no cotton stuff) and rain gear are required. Sun, Oct 2. Hiking Manchester-Essex Conservation Trust (MECT) on the North Shore. Registration required. 10:00am-2:00pm. We will be doing a loop hike in the beautiful MECT with its bountiful glacier made erratics. We will begin our hike by passing through the beautiful wetlands of Cedar Swamp and Heron Pond. As we continue our loop we will pass Baby Rock, Bishops Grave, Pulpit Rock and hike up beautiful Millstone Hill and then conclude our loop by again walking the boardwalk through Cedar Swamp and Heron Pond. As you will be walking over varied terrain: roots, rocks, slabs/whale backs with some steep ups and downs; appropriate hiking footwear is required (no sneakers or sandals) and hiking poles are highly recommended. Leashed dogs are welcome, and know that Winnekenni is a busy park and, there will be other dogs around. There are facilities and plenty of parking at the park. Moose Hill, established in 1916, is Mass Audubon's oldest wildlife sanctuary, encompassing protected forests, fields, and wetlands. This will be an approximate 6-7 mile moderate hike on trails with 600 feet elevation gain. The route includes trails in Moose Hill Farm (Trustees) and Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary (Mass Audubon). Be prepared to keep at a moderate pace. Thunderstorms or heavy rain will result in cancellation of the hike. The marshes adjacent to the pond are home to cattails, pitcher plants, sundew, snapping turtles and Great Blue Herons. Wed, Nov 2. Wednesday Morning Walk at Great Brook Farm, Carlisle. Registration required. 9:00am. Join us as we wind our way through Great Brook Farm State Park around ponds, through pine tree forests, over and around rocky hills, and through fields. This will be a moderate/fast walk of 4-5 miles along mixed terrain with minimal elevation gain (<500ft). We’ll spend part of our time on single-track hiking trails with lots of roots and rocks and part of the time on wider forest trails with good footing. Plan to be out for 2-3 hours. Join us as we hike Whitehall Reservoir which is a 620 acre great pond located about a quarter mile south of Route 135 and a mile west of Route 495 in Hopkinton. We will hike the approx. 8 mile perimeter and enjoy beautiful views of the reservoir throughout our entire hike. The pace will be moderate with minimal elevation (less than 300 ft). Join us for this moderately paced, fairly flat 8-miles hike in Sudbury and Marlborough. This hike takes us through parts of the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge, Hopbrook Marsh and Desert Conservation Lands, and SVT and GFWCM Memorial Forest. It offers a great diversity of terrains including wide sandy parts, pitch pine-scrub oak barrens, majestic pine forests, cold water streams, and beaver wetlands. The conservation area is the habitat for several endangered species, including the box and wood turtle and the blue-spotted salamander. Many bird species are commonly sighted here, including great blue heron, red shouldered hawk, ovenbird, common yellow throat, song sparrow, pine warbler, and wood thrush. We’ll plan to walk between 2 & 4 miles at a moderate pace. Parking: There is a small lot is located right next to the southern trailhead off of Haggetts Pond Rd. If it is full, parking along the street across (a neighborhood) from the parking lot is permitted. To reach the southern trailhead from Boston, take I-93 north to exit 39/Rt 133. Sun, Nov 20. Crow Hills & Ledges Hike & Forest Walk, Westminster, MA. Registration required. 9:30am-1:00pm. Check out one of the most scenic sections of the Midstate Trail along the Crow Hills and ledges and through scenic pristine forest in Westminster and Princeton on this “out and back” 7-mi round-trip. We may see wild turkeys and birds of prey along our way. Pack snacks for the way out and a picnic lunch to enjoy on the ledges along the way back. We will be moving at a moderate pace and participants should be ready for a few scrambles up and down the ledges and an overall 1500 feet of elevation gain. Expect approximately 2.5-3 hours of moving time. Families who are regular hikers are welcome! Meet at 9:30am at Midstate Trail Parking Lot, Narrows Road at Stone Hill Road, for a prompt departure and expect to finish by 1pm. Trailhead parking is less than 1/2 mi from Route 2. Temperatures are forecast in the high 30s so please dress in layers and consider bringing a warm beverage. Hunting is not allowed in Massachusetts on Sundays. Join us for one of our final Fall Friday walks of 2022 along the Boston Harbor Walk at Dorchester Shores. This will be an “out and back” walk from Carson Beach to Savin Hill, via Malibu Beach. We will walk around 6 miles, at a moderate pace. This trip can be joined using the MBTA Red Line “T” service. Further details will be provided to those participants confirmed on the walk. Sat, Dec 10. Urban Hike - Boston's New Walking City Trail!. Registration required. 10:00am-1:00pm. Walk 6 miles on Boston’s new Walking City Trail, from Jamaica Pond Boathouse to the Esplanade Park entrance on Mass. Ave! “Connecting 14 Boston neighborhoods from the Neponset River to Bunker Hill, the 25-mile Walking City Trail is a hiking path through Boston’s most immersive parks, urban wilds, community gardens, and greenways.” [www.bostontrails.org] Join us for Section 3! We will walk through the woods of Olmsted Park, climb Parker Hill for beautiful views of Boston, stroll along the Emerald Necklace past Fenway Park and the Victory Gardens, before finishing on the Charles River Esplanade entrance. Sat, Dec 10. Let's Hike Boxford State Forest and Bald Hill Conservation Area/North Andover. Registration required. 11:00am-2:30pm. Meet at 11:00am at the Boxford State Forest parking area (1470 Forest St, North Andover). The hike will begin on a section of the Bay Circuit Trail and also take us along other woodland trails as we explore this wonderful conservation area and learn about the conservation partners that helped protect this large area. Our hike will take us to Towne Pond that provides habitat for wildlife including beavers, otters, muskrats and many water fowl. We will enjoy great views of Towne Pond where we will stop for lunch/snacks. Expect to hike about 5 miles, sometimes over hilly-forested terrain. Bring sufficient water and snacks/lunch. Remember weather is getting colder so dress in layers and avoid cotton clothing. It’s hunting season so wear some orange. L Richard Lombard

It started with an original purchase of 250 acres, but now has grown to over 1000 acres. Our hike is mostly through wooded areas, with a couple fields thrown in. We will also come out the far side of Wheaton Farm and pass a large solar farm. Certain areas can be wet, so if it has rained a lot before our trip, wear waterproof boots if you have them. Located in the “metro-west” area of Boston, we will be hiking 7-8 miles and have about 700 feet of elevation gain. We will be hiking for about four hours at an easy-moderate pace. Wed, Dec 14. Explore F. Gilbert Hills before the Snow. Registration required. 9:00am-1:15pm. 45 Mill Street, Foxboro. Also known as High Rock Woods, our 6.7-mile hike at F. Gilbert Hills will include trails past Sunset Lake, High Rock, the woods surrounding Acorn Trail, and the lower meadows in the eastern portion of the property. We will also pass a number of standing and alignment stones, and stone beehives in the area. We will be hiking a moderate pace. L Lawrence Petrone

Wed, Dec 14. Let's Explore The Blue Hills - Two For One Special!. Registration required. 10:00am-2:30pm. Blue Hills, Braintree. So, what is a Blue Hills Two for One Special? We will hike 2 sections which are less traveled than some: The Braintree Triangle and the Boardwalk and some surrounding trails. We will meet at one parking area and then drive to the second. We will describe all that in the Information Sheet which will be emailed to registrants several days before the hike. This hike will be about 7 miles in total with minimal elevation gain. We are estimating about 4.5 hours but may be longer to include driving time between the two areas. Hiking the Boardwalk requires walking on wood planks which may be wet, depending on much rain we’ve had before the hike. Ls Joanne Newton, Bob Vogel

Sun, Dec 18. Glacial Features Walks at Gray Reservation, Sudbury. Registration required. 9:00am-12:00pm. Join us for a local walk exploring glacial formation in Sudbury. Gray Reservation has some of the finest examples of the features formed as the continental glacier receded at the end of the last ice age. You should expect a casual out-and-back hike through the woods of around 1 mile in 3 hours. Despite the relaxed pace, please bring appropriate footwear along with plenty of layers for the many stops along the way. Details of the meeting location will be sent to confirmed participants. Meet at 11:00am at the Crooked Pond Trailhead parking area and kiosk (Near 196 Middleton Rd). Plan to hike about 6-miles along a section of the Bay Circuit Trail and other, sometimes hilly, woodland trails that meander through this extensive conservation area, while we explore its wonderful ecology and wildlife. Open to those of all ages able to walk 6-7 miles at a normal adult pace. Sat, Dec 24. Millers River & Bearsden Forest Pre-Holiday Hike. Registration required. 9:30am-2:30pm. Enjoy some fresh air on a scenic local hike before the holidays. This 9.5-mi loop along Millers River in Athol, MA has 1700 ft of elevation gain and is planned for hikers who can manage a moderate to moderately fast pace (2.5-2.75 mph) for about 4 hours of moving time, plus breaks. We will be summiting three small hills on the route and should see waterfowl and other wildlife. Pack snacks and/or a light picnic lunch to enjoy along the way. We will meet at 9:30am for a prompt departure and expect to finish by 2:30pm. Meet at Newton Reservoir Parking Lot, S Royalston Road, Athol. Trailhead parking is less than a mile from Route 2. Fri, Dec 30. Final Friday Walk - Arnold Arboretum, Jamaica Pond & Olmstead Park. Registration required. 10:00am-12:30pm. Join us for the last Friday walk of 2022. We will complete a short loop in the Arnold Arboretum and then walk along the Arborway to Jamaica Pond and onto Olmstead Park, both part of Boston's Emerald Necklace. This is a 5.5 to 6 mile walk on mainly paved trails. Heavy rain cancels. This walk can be joined using the MBTA orange line. Fri, Dec 30. Let's Hike Musquash Conservation Area / Londonderry NH. Registration required. 11:00am-2:45pm. Musquash Conservation Area is Londonderry’s largest conservation holding. The area includes over 1,500 acres of land with more than 20+ miles of managed trails. Musquash is adjacent to the Litchfield State Forest, as well as, conservation land owned by the the Town of Litchfield. NH Fish and Game also owns adjacent land, which is managed as habitat for the endangered New England Cottontail. The hike will begin from the parking area/trailhead at 30 Tanager Way, Londonderry NH at 11:00am. From here we will begin our hike on the Heron Trail looping back to our starting point. Expect to hike over hilly forested terrain for a distance of about 6 miles. Our hike will take us through the middle of Musquash Conservation Area where we will have views of its extensive red maple swamp. The word Musquash refers to the aquatic rodent, the muskrat, which finds good habitat in the swamp. We will stop for snacks/lunch at the junction of the Landing and Betty Mack trails, known as the Landing. Remember weather is getting colder so dress in layers and avoid cotton clothing. It’s hunting season so wear some orange. Weather and trail conditions could change at any time so bring have a pair of MICROspikes, or equivalent stabilizer for traction on snow, ice, and frozen terrain. And gaiters are helpful to keep ice/snow from falling inside your winter footwear. Bring sufficient water and snacks/lunch. The weather forecast for the hike looks good, with partly cloudy skies, winds light and a high of 47°F. Directions: Take exit 4 on Rte. 93 toward Londonderry and merge onto NH 102 South. In 3.9-miles take right on Parmenter Rd which merges with High Range Rd. Continue for 0.9-miles and take left onto Wiley Hill Rd. Continue for 2.5-miles then take right onto Tanager Way.
