DCR Southeastern Massachusetts Adult Walking Club

Summer 2019

Welcome

The DCR Southeastern Massachusetts Adult Walking Club meets each weekend on either a Saturday or Sunday for recreational walks. This club is open to people of 16 years of age and older, and there is no fee to join. Walks average 2 to 5 miles. New walkers are always welcome.

The terrain can vary:
triangle  EASY (mostly level terrain)
triangletriangle  MODERATE (hilly terrain)
triangletriangletriangle  DIFFICULT (strenuous & steep)

Walks will be led by a park ranger or a Walking Club volunteer leader.

DCR recommends wearing hiking boots and bringing drinking water on all hikes.

Bug spray and sunscreen also suggested.

Moderate walk, about 4 miles. Enjoy a hike through the woods and wetlands of Massasoit State Park. Meet at the main parking lot at 1361 Middleboro Avenue in East Taunton. For info, call 508-828-4231.

Moderate walk, some hilly terrain, 3 miles, Walk from the Donovan School to Ponkapoag and return via Madden Road. Meet at the Donovan School on 123 Reed St. in Randolph. For more info, call 617-727-4573 x4.

Moderate walk, 4 miles. Hike along the Bentley Loop. Meets at Parking Lot 2 on Upper College Pond Road in Plymouth. For more info, call 508-866-2526.

Nasketucket Bay State Reservation     triangletriangle
Moderate walk, 3 miles. Walk along abandoned farm fields, along a rocky/sandy coast and through an holly/oak/beech forest. Meet at the main parking lot on Brandt Beach Road in Mattapoisett. For info, call 508-272-9376.

Nickerson State Park     triangletriangle
Moderate walk, 3.5 miles Hike through the back woods of Nickerson State Park; around kettle ponds, through pine-oak forests; a taste of Vermont on Cape Cod! Meet at the parking lot at the end of Flax Pond Rd. in Nickerson State Park, 3488 Main St. in Brewster. Parking fee waived for this program only. For info, call 508- 896-3491.

Sunday, June 30     9:00-10:30am
Quashnet River New Trail     triangletriangle
Moderate walk, 2.5 miles on a “new trail” along restored brook trout habitat with flat sandy fire roads, wooded trails and some small hills. No facilities bring water, bug spray and sunscreen. Meet at Martin Road kiosk, East Falmouth, off Rt.28. For info, call 508-457-0495 x125.

Moderate walk, 5 miles around the Lower Leach Pond and Bob's Trail. Hike will be mostly flat with roots and rocks. We will keep a moderate pace with frequent stops. For more info, call 508-238-6566. Parking fees apply.

Jehu Pond Conservation Area     triangletriangle
Moderate, 1.5-mile loop through forested areas, wetlands, and uplands, to discover abandoned cranberry bogs and native wildlife. No facilities bring water, bug spray and sunscreen. Park at Jehu Pond area off Great Oak Road in Mashpee. For info, call 508-457-0495 x125.

Moderately difficult. 5 miles + hike to Cherry Pond, one of the loveliest and most secluded hikes in Myles Standish State Forest: Meet at Parking Lot 2 (P2) off Upper College Pond Road in Plymouth. For more info, call 508-866-2526.

Fall River Heritage State Park     triangle
Easy 2-mile urban walk along the Taunton River boardwalk to Bicentennial Park and back. Meet at the Visitor Center at 200 Davol Street. Park in the DCR parking lot at 5 Water Street in Fall River. For more info, call 508- 675-5759.

Moderate, up to 2 mile walk along Dead Neck trail with beach, dunes and marsh and a chance to see migrating shorebirds, feeding osprey and more. No facilities bring water, bug spray and sunscreen.
