10:30am-12:30pm. Join us for a 4-5 mile walk/hike along Edgewood Farm Trail and the Stevens Trail, a scenic and easy to moderate walk. This is a Trustees Park and is free to all. Sat, July 10, 2021. Ward Reservation, Andover.
10:30am-12:45pm. Join us as we explore the sprawling landscape of the reservation and climb two hills (Boston & Holt) where the views are excellent (on a clear day!). We'll walk between 3 and 5 miles at a moderate pace. All levels are welcome. Some trails bisect the Bay Circuit Trail (the one that connects the North & South Shore). Park at the Trustees parking lot, on the right hand side of Prospect Street. Drive to very end of the road, past homes, and park at 65 Prospect St. If you are a Trustees member the parking is free. Otherwise the fee is $6. You can pay by cash (there is a little metal box) or use your CC at the kiosk. There are no bathrooms. Pack a snack, water, sunscreen, bug spray, and if you prefer, hiking poles. Many hikers used them on our last trip to Ward Hill. L Robin Doyle, CL Julia Hsia

Sat, July 17, 2021. Crown Hill / Noyes, NH.
10:30am-12:45pm. Join us on a 3.2 mile walk on the Atkinson Conservation Land hiking trails which are well-kept, easy to navigate and fun to do. We'll do a loop and will pass through 3 NH towns: Plaistow, Hampstead and Atkinson. Trailhead parking lot: 460 East Road, Hampstead, NH. You might also see the Town Line sign: Atkinson | Hampstead, the parking lot is right smack dab in the middle of both towns. L Robin Doyle

10:15am-12:30pm. We'll meander the pretty trails at Ravenswood Park, in Gloucester, MA. This is Trustees Reservation and is a nature reserve. Plan on hiking 3-5 miles. Parking is Free, but the lot is small. Street parking on both sides of the street is permitted. This is a show and go event: you'll need to sign an AMC waiver. Leisurely 4-mi walk including historic streets, secret alleyways, a hidden garden or two, and lots of picture-taking in one of Boston's most charming neighborhoods, and a short venture into a quiet, historic section of downtown Boston as well. 6:30pm-8:30pm. We all Scream for Ice Cream and Walks on the Beach. Join AMC Boston Chapter 20's & 30's and the Local Walks & Hikes Committees for an after-work, mid-week casual walk along Wollaston Beach. Feel the sand and water between your toes, catch up with friends and meet new ones. Ice cream, fried foods and other summertime favorites can be purchased along the boulevard. Everyone is welcome! 7-8 miles, about 3.5 to 4 hours [mid-morning to mid-afternoon] (depending, of course, on everyone's pace.), ~500' of elevation gain. Trails vary from 'dirt roads' to narrow, winding, rocky trails... will try to stick to the quieter, narrower, less used ones when we can. We will hike through/by Whitney and Thayer Woods, Ode's Den, Bigelow Boulder, Turkey Hill, the remains of “Nike site” located here during the Cold War, and Weir River Farm. Sat, Aug 7, 2021. Batchelder Park Trail Loop, Amesbury. - registration required
10:00am-11:30am. Starting at Lake Gardner in Amesbury Ma, the Batchelder Park Trail Loop is a 1.6 mile trail loop goes up Powow Hill to Batchelder Park. Hopefully, the day will be clear and we will get a a spectacular view of the coastline and the Atlantic Ocean. We will take a break at the top for water and snacks. The downward trek can be muddy in spots depending on the amount of rain, so bring appropriate footwear. As a bonus, Lake Gardner is currently allowing swimming and has paddle board and kayak rentals. Please park along the fence line so that swimmers and picnic-ers can park close to the pond. No dogs. L Liza Wynne

12:00pm-2:15pm. Whether its the spooky lore surrounding these woods since its settlement by colonists in 1693 or the extensive, sometimes confusing, maze of trails, Dogtown has largely remained a local's spot and there's nothing quite like it on the North Shore. This moderate loop hike traverses this Essex National Heritage area, distinguished by its beautiful, quiet stretch of forest between Rockport and Gloucester, making it a great option for folks who are looking for solitude and maybe don't mind getting a little lost. Come have fun with us! Pack bug spray, water, a snack, poles (if you want) and invite your pup if he/she is well-behaved. Dogs must be leashed. Heavy rain will cancel. Thurs, Aug 12, 2021. Search for Summer Sunsets: Webb Memorial State Park. - registration required
Join us for an early evening casual walk in search of that summer sunset. This week we will walk along the peninsula of Webb Memorial State Park in Weymouth. This magical place has a remarkable history. It once was the home of Native Americans; the Europeans took it for farming and grazing; a fertilizer factory was built and contaminated the area; and the military used it for a Nike site. In 1977 the military transferred the land to the state and it was finally restored to its natural beauty and opened to the public. Sunsets here are some of the best. On a clear evening, views of Boston and the harbor islands are picture perfect. This will be a casual walk with time for socializing. Feel free to bring snacks (or dinner) and water as we'll spend a short time stopping to take in the views. The exact time and location will be shown to approved participants only. 11:45am-1:45pm. The Phillips Academy to Moncrieff Cochran Sanctuary Loop is a 2.9 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Andover, Massachusetts that features a lake and is rated as moderate. By taking some other trails, we will plan to hike between 3 & 5 miles. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on leash. Prep for trip: bug spray, water & snacks, hiking poles (if you use them) and sunscreen. Meet at Parking area - 66-88 Chapel Avenue, (Andover), park opposite the gate. L Robin Doyle, CL Julia Hsia

7-8 miles, about 3.5 to 4 hours [mid-morning to mid-afternoon] (depending, of course, on everyone's pace). Borderland State Park straddles the town line between Easton and Sharon, hence the name. We will be hiking mostly the more remote trails of Borderland, which are less well used. Borderland is an 1800-acre State Park which was the estate of Blanche and Oakes Ames. Oakes was a descendent of the Ames Family which started the Ames Shovel Company. This company grew into the world's leading manufacturer of shovels during the period of the canal and railroad construction. Thus, the Ames had money. Lots of money. They donated the library to the town, and had it designed by H. H. Richardson, the noted American architect of the period. When they needed a railroad station so the railroad could be run to Easton, and provide easy access for their factory… not just any railroad station would do... so call H. H. again and have him design a railroad station, which they built and donated to the town. (Aside: Later in its life, when the railroad was no longer in operation through Easton, the Ames re-bought the station from the railroad and gave it to the town a second time, this time to use as the Historical Society.) When landscaping was needed, for the town center or their mansions, the call went out to Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed the Emerald Necklace around Boston, as well as New York's Central Park. Oakes was a Harvard trained botanist, and an orchid expert. Blanche was an artist and leading feminist of the period. Although we may not see it on our hike, Borderland contains Blanche and Oakes home, a stone structure (to provide fire safety to protect Oakes research materials and Blanche's drawings) that was built c.1910. The mansion has been used for several movie sets, including the latest "Ghostbusters" film as well as "Knives Out." Weather: Thunderstorms or extreme winds will delay, cancel, or shorten trips. Rain? Thurs, Aug 26, 2021. Search for Summer Sunsets: Nantasket Beach. - registration required
Join us for an early evening casual walk in search of that summer sunset. This week we will walk along the sands of the world-famous Nantasket Beach in Hull. Hull got its start as a quiet, remote seafaring village and over the years grew into a thriving community and resort. Some of you may remember the amusement park, Paragon Park (no longer there) which was opened in 1905 and was considered comparable to the World's Fair. Although the amusement park is long gone, we will enjoy a walk on the beach, the setting sun, and maybe even a glimpse of surfers tackling the waves. This will be a casual walk with time for socializing. Feel free to bring snacks (or dinner) and water as we'll spend a short time stopping to take in the views. Thurs, Sept 2, 2021. Search for Summer Sunsets: Great Blue Hill. - registration required
Join us for an early evening hike in search of that summer sunset. This week we will hike up to Great Blue Hill in Milton. We will take the easiest path to the top where we can get a view of the setting sun. This is a steep climb to the top and we will take it slowly. You should feel comfortable and be steady on your feet climbing up (and down) a steep grassy, rocky slope. This will be a slow hike to the top with time for socializing and taking in the sunset. Feel free to bring snacks (or dinner) and water as we'll spend time at the top to take in the views. Sat, Sept 4, 2021. Explore Appleton Farms Grass Rides, Hamilton MA. - registration required
10:00am. A loop through an historic farm and associated woods. Rolling grasslands, grazing livestock, stone walls, vegetable crops, and historic farm buildings comprise this 1,000-acre pastoral landscape, offering a rare glimpse into New England's agricultural past. established in 1638 and maintained by nine generations of the Appleton family. Appleton Farms is home to a diverse mosaic of plant and wildlife species. The grasslands provide habitat for one of New England's largest populations of bobolinks and meadowlarks, while the wetlands provide important spring feeding stops for migrating marsh birds and are home to frogs and salamanders, including the rare blue- and yellow-spotted salamander. Deer, fox, coyote, and mink are found in the fields, while the elusive fisher is common in the woodlands. Moderate pace, about 4 miles. No dogs, please. L Thurman Smith

Let's Explore Wheaton Farm, in Easton. Group limited to 10. About 6-7 miles. Afternoon hike. Wheaton Farm is conservation land in Easton. It started with an original purchase of 250 acres, but now has grown to over 1000 acres. Our hike is mostly through wooded areas, with a couple fields thrown in. We will also come out the far side of Wheaton Farm and pass a large solar farm. Certain areas can be wet, so if it has rained a lot before our trip wear waterproof boots. Or, like I do, just wear trail runners and walk right through it. (They dry out quickly.) A note about these walks. These hikes should be considered 'exploratory.' I will have done some research, but may not have had the opportunity to have hiked the exact route we will take. So… things occasionally might not always go perfectly. We might find some wet areas, or less than ideal trail conditions. But we will try to make the best of things and have fun. And we will all learn. If this sounds interesting… Come on along! I have never gotten lost and not made it out of the woods and back to the car… yet. L Bob Vogel

9:30am-11:30am. Join us for a great walk around Kenoza Lake in Haverhill, MA. The trails are well maintained and good for all levels of walkers and hikers. We'll follow the shoreline loop, a 4.2 mile trek. We walk at a moderate pace and we have a leader in the front and a leader in the back. Dogs on leash are welcome, and know that Winnekenni is a busy park and, there will be other dogs around. There is plenty of parking. Trip essentials: bugspray, sunscreen, water & a snack. Wed, Sept 22, 2021. Let's Explore - Foxboro/Sharon Conservation Land. - registration required
10:00am-1:30pm or so. We will hike some conservation land in Foxboro and Sharon. (Canoe River Wilderness Area) This will be about 6 miles over rolling terrain thru the woods. We will also hike a boring, but short, section of high tension lines to access these woods. Group limited to 10. You must bring a mask. We will wear them at "circle up", so we don't have to make a huge circle, and potentially at other times as necessary depending on the Covid status. Thunderstorms will delay, cancel, or shorten trips. Ditto for extreme winds. We won't cancel because of rain. L Bob Vogel

10:00am-12:00pm. Discover the Moncrieff Cochran Bird Sanctuary trails and 4-5 landmarks on the campus. This hike will be two parts: the hike/walk in the bird sanctuary - about 3-4 miles at a moderate pace and we'll extend the trip and visit notable landmarks on the PA campus. Join one or the other or both. We'll hike first. Downtown Andover offers sophisticated shops and dining for those interested in exploring the area after the event. Park at the end of Chapel Avenue down the hill and left. L Robin Doyle

Wed, Sept 29, 2021. Let's Explore - Whitney & Thayer Woods, Cohasset. - registration required
Whitney & Thayer Woods, plus Weir River Farm and Turkey Hill, Cohasset. 7+ miles, mostly woods with one ascent of Turkey Hill. About 450' elevation gain. 10:30 - about 2:00 with a lunch break. Trails vary from 'dirt roads' to narrow, winding, rocky trails... and we will try to stick to the quieter, narrower, less used ones when we can. We will hike through Whitney and Thayer Woods, a property that is a "The Trustees of Reservations" property in Hingham & Cohasset. This 824-acre property includes: Glacial erratics, including a grouping called Ode's Den, named after Theodore "Ode" Pritchard, a hermit who lived under one of the boulders after losing his home in 1830. We will then pass into Turkey Hill, a 62-acre property co-managed by The Trustees of Reservations with the Towns of Cohasset and Hingham. This property has a 187-foot summit with a spectacular view. Finally, we will hike around Weir River Farm, another property of The Trustees of Reservations. This is a 75-acre working farm comprising fields and pastures. Group limited to 10. L Bob Vogel

F. Gilbert Hills, AKA "Foxboro State Forest" is a 1000-acre state forest with 23 miles of trails. It includes a section of the Warner Trail. It abuts, and we will probably hike into, additional Foxboro conservation land. We will probably climb to "High Rock", so there will be some elevation gains on this hike. We will avoid the knee deep water flooding some trails from a new beaver dam. (Don't ask how I know it's knee deep. :-) 6-7 miles. Group limited to 10. L Bob Vogel

9:00am-12:00pm. Join us as we explore the woodlands of the Nobscot Reservation, near Sudbury MA. This moderately paced, 6 mile loop hike was a popular trip in the summer and it will be fun to experience the changing of the seasons. We will follow forest trails with some exposed rocks and roots and includes some steeper sections as we take in the views from Tipling Rock (371 ft) and Nobscot Hill (600 ft). More detailed information on the hike route and meeting location, will be provided once participants are confirmed. L Judith Watson

When landscaping was needed, for the town center or their mansions, the call went out to Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed the Emerald Necklace around Boston, as well as New York's Central Park. Oakes was a Harvard trained botanist, and an orchid expert. Blanche was an artist and leading feminist of the period. Although we may not see it on our hike, Borderland contains Blanche and Oakes home, a stone structure (to provide fire safety to protect Oakes research materials and Blanche's drawings) that was built c.1910. The 33 mile loop opened in October 2019 and showcases the region's natural beauty via wooded walking trails, bike paths, aqueduct trails, and sidewalks. Join us as we explore the southern section of the BLT between Westborough and Southborough. Much of our 5 mile "point to point" hike will be along the Sudbury Reservoir Trail and we will also visit Chestnut Hill farm, operated by the Trustees of the Reservation. Moose Hill was established in 1916, and is the oldest Mass Audubon wildlife sanctuary. It features a red maple swamp boardwalk, as well as, no surprise here, Moose Hill. I haven't been there in many years, and there are about 2000 acres, and 20 miles of trails, so we will explore. There is a nice view from a point on Moose Hill, we will plan to get there. So some elevation gain, although I don't remember a lot of steep hills. This facility abuts Moose Hill Farm, a property of The Trustees of Reservations, and we might find ourselves wandering there as well. Moose Hill is 534' high, so some elevation if we climb to the summit. While we might see deer, seeing a moose is unlikely. Note: Hunting season, depending on region and game species is starting up. Orange clothing recommended for all hikes. Sharon is a non-hunting town, and Moose Hill is a wildlife preserve, so we 'should' be safe on this trip. Sat, Jan 8, 2022. Hike at Goldsmith, Andover.
1:00pm-3:00pm. Old woods road meandering to Bessie's Point overlooking Fosters Pond. Some of the trees, rhododendrons and laurels growing along the roadway in Goldsmith Woodlands were planted by Bessie Goldsmith herself. Note the avenues of black pines, so dense that few plants can grow beneath them. Lady slippers abound here in late spring and other plants rarely seen are visited by Harvard University botanists. The marshes adjacent to the pond are home to cattails, pitcher plants, sundew, snapping turtles and Great Blue Herons. The uplands provide habitat for resident deer, fisher, fox and wild turkey while owls patrol the margins. Goldsmith is a beautiful spot for a hike in any season. Ring in the new year with fellow hikers. Plan to hike between 3 & 5 miles. Pack: warm clothing/wear layers, water, a snack, maybe hiking poles or spikes if there's ice or packed snow.
